The Cul-De-Sac

This was the first iteration of the Cul-De-Sac. This was more of a proof of concept looking back on it. The landscape was very sparse, and not much interaction came from the houses. However, this laid the ground work for us to add much MUCH more to the animation. Had to start somewhere! The first easter egg was Tony’s house. It is the first house on the right when the animation starts.

The Cul-De-Sac Christmas

The Cul-De-Sac Christmas started as a gag. We thought it would be fun to decorate the spooky neighborhood for Christmas. Street lamps were added, trees stripped of foliage, pumpkins swapped for snowmen, the road and sidewalks were covered in a light snow and the best of all Christmas lights! It was a challenge figuring out to add lights to all the houses. The Cul-De-Sac can be changed from Halloween to Christmas at the flip of a switch inside the C4D scene file. The Beetle Juice house was also first introduced in this version and the Addams Family house was moved down the street.

The Return of The Cul-De-Sac

The Return of The Cul-De-Sac is where things really started coming together to create an entertaining animated short showcasing the houses in the cul-de-sac. Much more detail was added and interactivity between the houses. The major changes and upgrades included adding Cal’s house to the mix, now across the street from Tony’s. Telephone poles, fire hydrants and manhole covers were added. Editing was improved with theme music or lines from the films playing from each home as the viewer passed by. The route of the camera changed as well and went up the steps to the Bates home. Lighting was also a huge improvement by adding different colored spotlights near the homes. A cemetery was also added with “easter egg” names on the tombstones.

The Cul-De-Sac Christmas Special!

We decided to create another cul-de-sac Christmas special since the mechanics were already there to switch everything over. In the spirit of the Star Wars movie that came out that December, The Cul-De-Sac Christmas Special! follows a Tie Fighter mailbox that breaks loose and wreaks havoc on the neighborhood. The easter egg here is Tony actually has a tie fighter mailbox outside his actual home that was custom built by Cal. The cemetery was changed for a snowman display inspired by the “Snowman House of Horror” built by the character Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes. Tony and Cal worked hard learning new techniques using dynamics in this version. Sadly, we don’t think Santa finished his run that night.

The Cul-De-Sac 3.0

This version we want to continually improve the look of the animation through lighting and editing. The major addition to the neighborhood as almost all the houses will have vehicles related the homes either parked or diving past. The poltergeist home will be added along with more details to improve the overall look of the animation. To be continued….
